In Phase One, including the “pre-op” visit and lap band procedure, the emphasis is on developing a healthier eating schedule, making healthier choices and reinforcing your motivation and reasons to lose weight.  Phase Two emphasizes eating only for hunger, increasing activity and making yourself a priority. Phase Three continues to tweak your eating and exercise plan, ensures sound sleep, and reinforces your desire to maintain your new healthy, happy, balanced lifestyle. Wild Animals have Gained Weight, Too!

fast-food-eating-animal-1-640x360A fascinating article by David Berreby in Aeon, takes a fresh and scary look at a lot of evidence that obesity may not simply be “the result of a lack of willpower and an inability to discipline eating habits.”

Many scientists who study the biochemistry of fat and the epidemiologists who track weight trends  “believe that personal gluttony and laziness cannot be the entire explanation for humanity’s global weight gain.”

As the American people got fatter, so did marmosets, vervet monkeys and mice. The problem may be bigger than any of us.

Berreby questions-In placing the blame for the obesity epidemic on individuals has our society continued in the same vein as Bruno Bettelheim’s blaming  autism on mothers with cold personalities and blaming natural disasters like tornadoes and earthquakes on sinfulness?

Painless Gastric Band Surgery-It’s Virtual!

Unfortunately, despite the cost, a year or so after gastric band surgery, the success rate is disappointingly low.  A report at a recent meeting of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery stated that “using 40% excess weight loss as the standard” for adjustable gastric banding “resulted in a five-year success rate of about 50%, which declined to 20% at 10 years.”

A simple tightening of the stomach does not create a new healthy lifestyle or change the metabolism. Most of all, it does not create a new self image and mindset. Easy Way to Lose Weight-Just Pay Attention!

I am currently in a house where lunchtime is also catchup-on-reading-time for the others at the table. Many other Americans use meal time for catching up on email or  playing games.

A recent study shows that when we aren’t paying attention to what we eat, we tend to eat more and even get hungry sooner.  When we are distracted, we can’t remember how much we’ve eaten and memory is tied to satiety.

Researchers found that distracted eaters, who were playing computer solitaire, “felt significantly less full just after lunch. . .  and at the taste-test session a half-hour later, they ate about twice as many cookies as those who had lunch without playing games.”

So, if you want to eat less to cut down on the calories, but hate that hungry feeling, just pay attention to what you are putting in your mouth. Look at it, smell it, taste it, notice the texture, chew slowly and you will find you are satisfied with less. What an easy way to lose some pounds!

Another study has shown that by just leaving 3 bites on the plate, we can cut 1oo calories per day (Eat Your Way to Happiness p. 95, Elizabeth Somer, MA, RD).  If all you do from now on is to start looking at what you are putting into your mouth, you won’t even miss those 3 extra bites. A year later, that will lead to a loss of 14 pounds. Without dieting!

Local Foods Better than Organic?

It looks like we need to look at the BIG picture, when we go to our favorite organic grocers.  What does it cost in petroleum and other dangers to the environment?  “In the UK, researchers calculate that purchasing food grown within a 12-mile radius has a greater positive impact than buying organic food that is not local, substantially lowering the environmental cleanup costs from $2.3 billion per year to under $230 million.  That’s a 90% savings!”

To start off, we do not need spring and summer fruits during the winter, in fact, there is substantial evidence that it is healthier to eat according to our own environment’s seasons and personal bio- rhythms.

Of course, we may be more concerned with the immediate effects of pesticides and decreased nutrition for our own selves and families.  The best case scenario would be local AND organic.  Let’s definitely push for that in our own communities.  But, as an example of the broader issue—
